Being a young woman in the workplace sucks kinda bad

Being a young woman in the workplace sucks.

I am tired, tired of not being taken seriously, tired of being interrupted and tired of people assuming men do the work that I do.

I have been in the same job for almost five years. When I started I was 20 years old. In that time I have learnt a lot, grown a lot and become very good at my job. Yet I feel as though sometimes Iā€™m treated the same way as when I started.

Certain people will ask my male counterpart at work to do things for them instead of me.

PeopleĀ UNDERESTIMATEĀ me.

People INTERRUPT me.

For example, I once had a crucial message that I needed to get out to all staff very quickly. This message affected the whole business. I attempted to call the receptionist to ask her to put a message over the loudspeaker for everyone.

When I called her she answered the phone with ā€œWhat do you want? Other people are on the phoneā€. Before I could tell her what I needed she said: ā€œ Call back laterā€. She then proceeded to hang up on me. Fantastic.

My question is. If I was a man, someone older or someone in a higher position would she have done this? Iā€™m guessing probably not.

Itā€™s bad enough when a man does this to you but even worse when it is anotherĀ womanĀ who should know what it feels like.

Itā€™s also bloody annoying when a man who has been doing something for less time than you have but still likes to be super ā€œhelpfulā€ andĀ explainĀ to you how to do something.

When this happens I usually just nod my head like an idiot but what I really want to tell him to do is go to hell and stop telling me how to do my job.

IT SUCKS!

If youā€™re sick of being interrupted, talked down to andĀ underestimatedĀ stick up for yourself. Also, stick up for other women you see this happening to. Itā€™s the only way to combat thisĀ toxic work culture.
