How to Become a Yoga Teacher in Australia
A practice of deep concentration, physical control, and mental power, yoga has been carried out from ancient civilizations since time can tell. Its meditation principles keep the psyche and the body feel more alive, bringing in a calm and peaceful aura to improve the mind and body. While this is a good hobby for everyone, others think of it as a way of life too —- in a way that they could earn while being able to educate someone to practice meditation.
Yoga teachers in Australia have become in demand. Since its uproar in the 20s, more and more people are considering being a yoga instructor whether part-time or full-time. Hourly rates for Yoga teachers in Australia can reach up to $45 or more, depending on what type of yoga class their students want to take. Nevertheless, it can be a hobby and a source of income for anyone as well.
However, apart from the high pay you can get, being a yoga teacher isn’t done overnight. It takes a lot of patience, training, and certifications to ensure the high quality of meditation in whatever form it may be. If you happen to aspire to teach yoga, here is what you should do to become one:
Join Yoga Classes
Technically, this isn’t part of the program to become a yoga teacher in Australia, but it must be deemed necessary to know the basics first. Becoming a yoga teacher needs experience, for you to know the fundamentals of yogic philosophy and apply it to yourself. Basically, you may just enter yoga classes at your own pace, making sure you can grasp even just a little of the experience of yoga exercise. This will lead you to know how it feels like being a student once you become a teacher, and be able to connect with their mind, body, and spirit once you start teaching yoga anytime soon.
Find Affiliate Schools
The Yoga Alliance regulates yoga practitioners to be able to teach yogic philosophy and apply it to students as well. Hence, it is necessary to find a Registered Yoga School (RYS) first and enrol in whichever yoga certification best suits you. There are different courses where you can learn but see to it that you’re taking the class for the type of yoga accreditation that you would want. Nonetheless, it is suggested to be a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) first before becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). To cut it short, being a CYT is like earning your bachelor’s degree, and being certified as an RYT means you have earned your master’s degree; you’ll also be listed in the worldwide registries.
Pick the type of Yoga Course
As per Yoga Alliance, there are different types of certifications that you can enrol in. However, the number of hours entails your mastery; the longer it is, the most qualified you would become.
RYT® 200
This means you’ll have a 200-hour training course with a school registered with Yoga Alliance. However, you will not be able to have different schools just to complete the course fast. It must come from the same school only, ensuring quality and correct pacing for learning.
RYT® 500
With a 500-hour yoga training, you may enrol in an RYT200 school and get another RYT300 advanced learning in another school. However, you should be able to complete the 200-hour training in the same school first before you can proceed to the 300-hour advanced study from another school. Yet, this also entails that participants must complete 100 teaching hours within the course timeline.
E-RYT® 200
You may also enrol to become an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher for additional mastery. This entails being able to teach 1,000 teaching hours in a span of 2 years after completing RYS 200. Once registered, an E-RYT 200 is provided to become a Lead Trainer and provide education and workshops to aspiring candidates who want to become an RYT 200.
E-RYT® 500
Perhaps the highest form of certification, this means that you can complete 2,000 teaching hours; 1,500 if which must be done within the span of competing for RYS 200 and RYS 500, and 500 teaching hours can be done after but within a 4-year timeline. After which, you will be provided with training and workshop materials to provide education for those wanting to be an RYT 200 or RYT 500.
Enrol in Specialties
If you think it cannot get more exciting, think again. You may also enrol in specialty courses designed most especially for children and prenatal clients.
Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT®)
You may be able to teach yoga to children if you have successfully completed and registered RYT 200. You must complete an RYT 200 course, and be able to have a 95-hour teacher training in a Registered Children’s Yoga School (RCYS). Still, it is required to have at least 30 hours of teaching experience in children’s yoga since completing the RCYS.
Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT®)
Created to teach yoga for soon-to-be moms, this certification requires an RYS 200 certificate and an 85-hour teacher training in a Registered Prenatal Yoga School (RPYS). You must also have at least 30 hours of teaching experience since completing the RPYS to become a registered RPYT. And take note, this can mean higher costs especially since teaching pregnant women is crucial to the mother and child’s mental and physical well-being —- you’ll be taking care of 2 clients in one.
Teaching Yoga requires a lot of resources and skills. Thus, becoming one isn’t easy; you need to have the available time and effort for you to give the best quality yoga experience to whatever clients you would encounter. Hence, it may cost you a lot, but the benefits that you will receive will be the reward for the bargain.
Maybe it’s now time to find the best yoga school near you. Care to become a certified yoga instructor soon?
